Our Story

When we lost our son Stewie in a drowning accident in 1989, we decided to do everything we could to prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedy. We started the Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation, leading us to write two books and raise $6 million for water safety awareness. Our dream has always been to open a swim school. Drowning is a leading cause of death for children four and under, but those who receive swim lessons are 88% less likely to drown. If our son knew how to float and roll over onto his back, he might still be with us today.

Our mission at the Stewie the Duck Swim School is to save lives, one lesson at a time. All the profits from the Swim School will go back to funding free or low-cost swim lessons for children in need. Our goal is to fund at least 20,000 free swimming lessons every year!

My daughter had her first swim class the other day and we had the best experience. Stew Leonard welcomed us himself upon arrival and we were greeted by the warm and enthusiastic staff. My daughter's swim instructor was patient and caring, explaining everything through each step of the class. Our family is so happy we found Stewie the Duck! Our six-year-old just started swimming and our four year old can now float on her back as we’ve been going consistently since the Summer. It’s been great to see their progress! Our daughter is usually skeptical in new settings, but absolutely adores Nerayah (she is awesome with the kids!) That being said, all of the instructors help the kids feel supported and comfortable. They also have excellent customer service, and everyone is super friendly and helpful! Highly recommend!
